Using local history as a source for design the pupils
and wider community of Hillmead Primary School, Brixton
- created this stunning victorian mosaic for their main
school entrance. For example, the lamp post refers to
nearby Brixton Electric Avenue which was the first
street in Britain to have electric street lighting.
The kitchen and laundry scene refers to part of the
school building which was a laundrette, and now the
homework and computer room!
Research was carried out with Lambeth Archives who supplied
old photographs to the children to show that the Milliners
and Sweetshop were thriving business on Brixton High
Street. Using the existing victorian features of the
wall to re-create the two fireplaces and diagonal panels
worked exceptionally well.160 school children, several
teachers, parents and local residents were involved.
The project was facilitated by the artists Lucy Steggals
and Julie Norburn and took 5 weeks to create.
