Save the World Club has launched an
appeal to save the Welsh Hall in Elm Road. The intention
is to refurbish the premises and turn them back into a thriving
community arts centre. Superficial work to make the
building usable has been completed, including temporary window
repairs, the installation of radiant halogen heaters, and
a few coats of paint, and the hall is now being used every
week day for the various community mosaic sessions (including
class visits by local school children), and the after school
homework club. During the school holidays it becomes
the focal point for the holiday clubs run by Save the World
Club. Nevertheless much remains to be done to reverse
the years of decay.
The hall's history
Details of the building's history are
sparse. The earliest building plans for a hall on this
site date back to over a century ago in 1887 and 1890, but
the name "Kingston Welsh Hall" does not appear on
record until the 1940s. It is clear from minutes discovered
in the hall itself that it was once the hub of a thriving
Welsh church community which was at its peak in the 1930s. Any donations should
