Everyone had a tremendous time at our recent Sewing Repair Workshop, with a dozen people coming to get some advice on using a needle and thread as well as to have a chat and enjoy a cuppa.
The session was led by Martha, a Kingston University student in her final year of a degree in Fashion Communications. She connected with our director Tariq Shabbeer last year at our warehouse after hearing about STWC through a friend and has visited us regularly ever since.
Martha was keen to commend the welcoming and accessible nature of our charity and the ethos of reuse that we promote - the session itself advocated repair and taught the skills needed to do so in an attempt to tackle the culture of disposal that exists with clothing.
One of the attendees, Alison, said: “I’m learning things I need to know. My mother comes from a time where repair was normal - she did try teaching me, but I had forgotten most of it.” She added: “Martha clearly knew what she was doing and was very clear in her explanations and instructions.”
Martha expressed that she’d love to do further sessions with us in the future and we intend to have more such workshops - held in local libraries - in the next few months before she graduates. Watch this space for updates!
